Wow! Room two were the lucky winners of lunch on Friday. Mr Akroyd said the class who returned the most parent contact details from last week's newsletter would be treated to hot chips. Well done guys! We did it!
Having updated email addresses and cell-phone numbers will allow the school to immediately contact parents in the event of an emergency. We are using a new system developed after the Canterbury earthquake, which will make communicating with you much easier! Thank you for returning these quickly! Thanks Mr Akroyd...the chips were delicious!

Today's PE Session
Go 4 It was awesome today. We gave league a go, learning the 'hamburger hold', and how to pass correctly. We also played some fun games. Good on you all for participating!
Special News
This week Janae shared a special hat, medal, and photo from a race she competed in at Tauranga. It looked like she had a fantastic time. Well done Janae!
Olivia was so inspired by watermelon day, that she made her own carving in the weekend. Here is her watermelon cat! Apparently her watermelon ice-blocks were also pretty delicious!
Today Ethan shared a special book he treasures all about warriors! Thanks for sharing guys! You're a fabulous class!

· She is a good artist – great at
drawing
· She is a kind friend to others
· She cares for people if they are hurt
· She’s always happy and excited
· Has fabulous ideas in writing
· Layla is respectful
· She gives new things a go
· She is fun to play with
Where do flies go in winter?
Last week we had Mrs Moyes teaching us for two days while Mrs Templeton completed assessments.
We read a fabulous story and created our own 3d spiders. We also enjoyed writing some wacky self descriptions! Come in and read them in our writing books!

Pass It! Netball skill development
We had our first session in 'Pass it' today. We practiced our chest passes, our bounce passes, and having 'our w's ready' when catching the ball. Our favourite game was 'bob down'.

Hands up for Learning!
We traced our hands and decorated them for our learning wall. This display will show how we are progressing in our learning as individuals. We will have a sticker to remind us what level we are working at, but more importantly we need to be aware of our next steps in learning. As always, we are reaching for the stars!
Our All About Me Tree
Last week we finished our personal profiles and displayed them on our 'All About Me' Tree. We also coloured in our reward charts. When we get ten ticks, we earn a sticker for our chart. When our chart is full -we earn a prize!

Watermelon Day
Our watermelon day was full of integrated
learning activities.
We
had science activities – exploring why watermelons float, and predicting how
far the splatter would go if we dropped one off the roof. It went a whopping 10 metres!
In numeracy, we
estimated and
weighed our watermelon - Sophie had the closest estimate - but we were still 3 kg out! We were impressed by Kiera and Ethan's quick solution to our mathematical problem;
'Mrs Templeton paid for 13 watermelons. If each watermelon cost $3.99, what was the total cost?'
Check out this clever thinking! (Ignore the spelling...the focus was the strategy!)
In literacy we wrote taste poems, and found facts about how they
are grown, their history, and their nutritional value. In art, we looked at
examples of watermelon carvings – then tried our own!
The
day was a full of fun! What a delicious way to start the year!

Learning through play
On Wednesday, we explored some of the class numeracy games. All of the games we played were reinforcing our place value and number knowledge, which is our current learning focus. Some of the numeracy apps on the ipads are great fun and provide excellent opportunities for practice. The ipad game we are playing here is 'slide100'.
We have been letting our teacher know about our interests and the ways in which we learn best. Many of us mentioned that we loved science and building things, so we had an opportunity to experiment with some simple circuits during our down time this week.
Swimming
Our class swimming days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. We need to remember our togs! This week we showed our teacher what we were capable of in the pool so that she could group us.
Powhiri
We enjoyed the powhiri on our first day of school. This was a great way to welcome our new staff and pupils. We are very lucky to have Kiera joining our class. Welcome to Apanui School!

Our Learning Environment
Welcome to our classroom!
We have been enjoying the way in which our classroom has been set up. Our teacher has ditched the tote trays, allowing us to work in more flexible ways which better suit our individual learning needs. We are no longer confined to working in one set space; instead enjoying the opportunities to collaborate at the group table, kneeler table, or mat space. If we wish to work quietly with a partner, we have the option of using the desks or sitting up on the bar stools. Our mixture of wireless (ipads) and wired technology offers us access when we need it.
